How to check a Missouri insurance agent's license

The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) has a free search that shows any agent's or agency's license, phone, address and the agency an agent represents. Start at the DCI's Find an Insurance Agent/Agency page. It takes a minute, and you can do it before you call anyone listed here.

Steps

  1. Open the DCI's Find an Insurance Agent/Agency page.
  2. Choose License & Contact Info. The DCI says all licensed agents and agencies are in this database.
  3. Search by the agent's name or the agency's name. The DCI says the result shows the license, the phone number and address, and the agency the person represents. An agency's result also lists its agents.
  4. Back on the same page, choose See Enforcement Actions to see whether the agent has been disciplined for breaking Missouri insurance laws.
  5. If you can't find the person or agency, call the DCI's Licensing Section at 573-751-3518.

Why it matters

In Missouri, nobody may "sell, solicit or negotiate insurance" without a license for that line of insurance (RSMo 375.014). That applies to independent and captive agents alike.

Other checks

  • The insurance company. The NAIC suggests also checking that the insurance company is licensed in your state, and whether it has complaints, through its Consumer Insurance Search.
  • Questions or complaints. The DCI's Insurance Consumer Hotline is 800-726-7390.
